ISLAMABAD: Russia has requested fresh peace negotiations with Ukraine to take place in Istanbul next Monday, aiming to revive efforts to end the war that has now entered its third year.
However, Ukraine insists it will only agree to talks once Russia submits its peace plan in writing. Kyiv is demanding serious diplomacy that leads to tangible progress rather than delays.
Stalemate Continues Despite Diplomatic Push
The last direct talks between the two sides were held in Istanbul on May 16 — their first face-to-face meeting in over three years — but these failed to produce any breakthrough.
Russia’s invasion, which began in February 2022, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and widespread destruction, with Moscow still controlling around 20% of Ukraine’s territory, including Crimea.
Moscow’s demands require Ukraine to abandon NATO membership ambitions and relinquish occupied land, conditions Kyiv rejects outright.
Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov emphasized the need for a clear Russian memorandum before any further meetings. “The Russian side has at least four more days before their departure to provide us with their document for review,” he said.
US President Donald Trump, who has been advocating for peace, expressed frustration at Russia’s delays and warned he would soon decide whether Putin is serious about ending the conflict.
Ongoing Conflict Undermines Peace Efforts
Despite diplomatic talks, the fighting continues unabated. Recently, Ukraine launched one of its largest drone strikes on Russia, while Moscow conducted heavy missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that the Russian delegation, led by Vladimir Medinsky, is ready to present its peace proposal in Istanbul.
However, Ukraine accuses Moscow of stalling and lacking genuine intent to cease hostilities.
President Zelensky condemned Russia’s approach, saying the Kremlin “will constantly look for reasons not to end the war.”
The Kremlin also rejected calls for a summit involving Zelensky, Putin, and Trump, insisting that such a meeting could only happen after concrete agreements between negotiators.
The war’s outcome remains uncertain as both sides prepare for the next round of talks amid ongoing violence and diplomatic tension.
