ISLAMABAD: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not been invited to attend the upcoming G7 summit scheduled to take place in Ottawa, Canada, from June 15 to 17, 2025.
This marks a departure from previous years when Modi participated as a special invitee at the G7 gatherings.
The summit, involving the world’s major industrialized nations, continues to exclude Modi amid unresolved diplomatic issues between India and Canada.
G7 Summit Invitations and India’s Position
The G7 group consists of Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, along with the European Union, IMF, World Bank, and the United Nations. While countries like South Africa, Australia, and Ukraine have accepted invitations to the Canadian-hosted event, India has neither received an official invitation nor shown interest in attending.
Sources suggest that relations between the two countries must improve before Modi’s participation in such high-profile international forums can be considered. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has officially stated that there is no confirmed information regarding Modi’s attendance at the summit.
Security and Diplomatic Concerns
Security concerns have also been cited as a potential barrier to Modi’s visit to Canada.
The strained relationship between India and Canada, highlighted by recent political and diplomatic disagreements, continues to influence Modi’s exclusion from the summit.
Reports indicate that Canada’s decision reflects ongoing tensions, including issues raised over alleged Indian spy activities on Canadian soil and political unrest linked to separatist movements. Both Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have publicly condemned violence linked to these issues, but the diplomatic chill remains evident.
