Gaza Described as ‘Hell on Earth’ as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

ISLAMABAD: The humanitarian situation in Gaza has deteriorated drastically, with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warning that Palestinians are being “stripped of their human dignity” amid ongoing conflict. Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the ICRC, described the conditions in Gaza as worse than ever since April, calling the area “hell on Earth.”

She emphasized the urgent need for global action, highlighting that the level of suffering witnessed shocks the collective conscience of the international community.

The conflict has caused immense civilian suffering, with combat operations showing “utmost disrespect for civilians,” as reported by Al Jazeera.

Access to basic necessities such as food, water, and medical care remains severely limited due to prolonged blockades and ongoing violence, deepening the humanitarian crisis in the region.

International Responses and Challenges

Efforts to address the crisis at the United Nations have faced significant hurdles. A draft UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, along with increased humanitarian access in Gaza, faced a major setback when the United States indicated it would veto the resolution, according to reports citing Israeli officials.

The resolution sought to ease the dire conditions faced by civilians amid widespread malnutrition and limited aid following Israel’s lifting of an 11-week blockade in late May.

Global Political Reactions

In another related development, Norway’s parliament recently voted against tightening investment restrictions on its sovereign wealth fund regarding companies operating in the occupied West Bank.

Lawmakers rejected proposals to divest from companies allegedly involved in activities contributing to Israel’s war crimes and occupation, signaling the complex international political dynamics surrounding the conflict.

The worsening humanitarian conditions and diplomatic deadlocks underscore the urgent need for renewed international efforts to protect civilian lives and restore peace in the region.
