The 2025 Maccabiah Games, the largest international Jewish sports event, have been postponed to summer 2026 amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran. Originally scheduled for July 2025 in Jerusalem, organizers cited safety concerns as the main reason for the delay.
Safety First for Athletes and Fans
In an official statement, the organizing committee said the decision was made in light of the ongoing conflict and the need to ensure participants’ security. “We’ll see you next year—stronger and more united than ever. These will be the most meaningful Maccabiah Games yet,” the statement read.
The games were expected to bring together around 10,000 athletes from across the globe to compete in various sports. Often dubbed the “Jewish Olympics,” the Maccabiah Games are held every four years. Notably, the previous edition in 2021 was also delayed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Disappointment, But Understanding
While athletes, organizers, and fans have expressed disappointment, many agree that the postponement was necessary. Given the current regional instability, stakeholders believe prioritizing safety was the responsible course of action.
Preparations for the 2026 event will continue, with hopes that the political climate improves in time for a peaceful and successful celebration of Jewish athleticism and unity.
