ISLAMABAD: The government has reaffirmed its commitment to rolling out 5G services as Pakistan crosses a major digital milestone with 200 million mobile subscribers.
IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced continued progress on next-generation networks while celebrating the country’s growing telecom penetration at a PTA-organized ceremony.
Digital Growth Accelerates Nationwide
Pakistan’s telecom sector now serves 150 million broadband users alongside over 2 million fiber-to-home connections.
To mark this achievement, all mobile subscribers will receive free 2GB data and 200 minutes today through a simple dial-up code.
The PTA revealed broadband penetration has jumped from 53.6% to 60.8% since 2023, reflecting rapid digital adoption.
Bridging the Digital Divide
Authorities are implementing special initiatives to boost female digital inclusion across educational institutions.
Free Wi-Fi hotspots will operate for six months at selected women’s universities to enhance learning access.
200 locally assembled smartphones will be distributed to female users through a transparent lottery system.
The minister highlighted success in reducing the mobile internet gender gap, with women now comprising 38% of users.
