Islamabad: Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stated that the country is currently facing a severe natural calamity, with flood conditions prevailing in three major rivers — Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej. Pakistan Army personnel are tirelessly engaged in rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.
During a press conference in Islamabad, attended by Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar and NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, the DG ISPR informed that following the directives of the Field Marshal, army troops immediately joined the rescue efforts, and many people have been relocated to safe locations so far.
He regretfully disclosed that two army personnel have been martyred during the relief operations. Rescue efforts via boats are ongoing at Kartarpur, and the Karakoram Highway has been reopened for traffic.
According to Federal Minister Attaullah Tarar, water flow in the Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala, Chenab River from Marala to Head Khanki, and around Qadirabad has reached critical levels.
He said that at Head Khanki, the water flow has exceeded 1 million cusecs, and all district officials have been alerted regarding evacuations.
Attaullah Tarar added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is personally monitoring the situation and has ordered to strengthen early warning systems, expedite relief operations, and conduct damage assessments.
