Snapchat to charge users for storing photos, videos beyond 5GB

California:  Snapchat users have been informed of a major change: the app will now require payment for storing photos and videos once the free storage limit of 5GB is exceeded. The announcement comes from Snapchat’s parent company, which revealed that over one trillion images and videos have been saved using its ‘Memories’ feature.

Users with data usage under 5GB will continue to enjoy free storage, but those with more than 5GB of saved content must subscribe to paid plans to retain their memories. This step is aimed at maintaining the app’s storage system and enhancing user experience.

The company plans to charge around 2.99 Australian dollars per month for 100GB of storage. For higher storage needs, premium packages like Snapchat+ and Snapchat Platinum will offer storage options ranging from 250GB to 5TB.

Users exceeding the 5GB limit will be given a 12-month grace period to either upgrade their plan or delete excess data. The rollout of this new policy will be gradual and global, with initial testing already underway in the UK. Pricing details for other regions have yet to be announced.

The announcement has triggered strong reactions on social media, with many users expressing frustration and threatening to leave the platform if forced to pay for storage. Some have called the move ‘greedy,’ arguing that charging for storing memories is unfair.
