Hong Kong: A tragic accident occurred early Monday morning at Hong Kong International Airport when a Turkish cargo plane skidded off the runway during landing and crashed into the sea. The incident resulted in the deaths of two airport security personnel who were riding in a security vehicle.
The Boeing 747 cargo plane was attempting to land on runway 07L when it suddenly lost balance, veering left and colliding with an airport security vehicle conducting routine patrols. One security officer died at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
Thankfully, the plane’s four crew members were unharmed, and there were no passengers or cargo on board the aircraft.
Airport authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on factors such as the condition of the aircraft, weather conditions, the state of the runway, and the pilot’s decision-making. Officials confirmed that the security vehicle was on its designated route and was not at fault.
Following the accident, the northern runway was temporarily closed, though flights continued to operate as usual on other runways.
This incident is being regarded as one of the most significant tragedies in Hong Kong Airport’s 25-year history, raising concerns about safety protocols in air operations.
