Ankara : Turkey has expressed its willingness to play a constructive role in reducing the mounting tensions between the United States and Iran.
As per Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to engage in discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during his upcoming visit to Turkey. The talks will focus on potential avenues for de-escalation through diplomatic dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
Turkish officials highlighted the country’s readiness to contribute to any diplomatic efforts aimed at easing the current tensions, especially in light of the delicate situation. A formal meeting between the two foreign ministers is scheduled for Friday, during which the focus will be on regional security and the state of US-Iran relations.
Additionally, Turkey has begun exploring contingency plans to reinforce its border security should the US take military action against Iran.
A senior Turkish official noted that, in the event of a US strike on Iran and the subsequent weakening of the Iranian government, Turkey would implement additional measures to monitor and secure its borders more closely.
In recent months, US officials have not dismissed the possibility of military intervention, especially following Iran’s severe response to domestic protests. This has been accompanied by the deployment of a US aircraft carrier in the Middle Eastern waters.
Turkey, a NATO member, shares a 530-kilometer-long border with Iran. The country has previously voiced opposition to any military interventions against Iran. A 380-kilometer-long wall has already been constructed along parts of the border, but authorities have acknowledged that these precautions may not be adequate given the evolving geopolitical scenario.
