Islamabad : The Punjab government has introduced a series of significant initiatives aimed at controlling smog and addressing environmental challenges across the province, with a focus on improving air quality and strengthening regulatory oversight.
Speaking at a World Environment Day event in Lahore, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the provincial administration has undertaken extensive and unprecedented work in the environmental sector over the past two years.
She said that controlling smog and protecting the environment have been key priorities, supported by strict enforcement measures and the adoption of modern monitoring technologies.
According to her, special attention has been given to industrial facilities and brick kilns, which are among the major sources of air pollution in the province.
The minister noted that environmental monitoring systems have been installed in more than 9,000 industrial units across Punjab to help reduce emissions and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
She explained that these systems enable authorities to track and regulate pollutants released from industrial operations more effectively.
In addition, Marriyum Aurangzeb said that QR code tracking has been implemented at over 14,000 brick kilns. This system allows officials to verify kiln activity and ensure adherence to environmental standards, helping to eliminate illegal or non-compliant operations.
She emphasized that these measures are part of a broader and long-term strategy to reduce smog, safeguard public health, and promote sustainable environmental practices throughout the province.
The minister further stated that the government remains committed to strengthening environmental enforcement and monitoring mechanisms to achieve lasting improvements in air quality.
