ISLAMABAD: Two bridges in Russian regions bordering Ukraine collapsed overnight following explosions that have been officially labeled as acts of terrorism, killing seven people and injuring dozens more. The incidents took place in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk regions, with emergency responders working urgently at the scenes. In Bryansk, a road bridge collapsed onto a railway line late Saturday, derailing a passenger train bound for Moscow and resulting in seven fatalities. Authorities reported that at least 71 people were injured, with 44 hospitalized.
Details of the Explosions and Aftermath
In a related incident, a rail bridge in the neighboring Kursk region was destroyed in the early hours of Sunday, derailing a freight train and injuring its driver. Both bridges were targeted in what officials described as “illegal interference.” The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation, but no group has claimed responsibility. Videos circulating on social media show rescuers navigating the wreckage and cries for help amid the chaos. Russian President Vladimir Putin was briefed throughout the night on the developments.
Political Tensions and Security Concerns
The blasts occurred amid heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with Russia blaming Kyiv for the attacks, calling Ukraine a “terrorist enclave.” Since Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine in 2022, sabotage incidents targeting Russia’s railway infrastructure have increased, disrupting transportation of troops and military supplies. The explosions coincide with diplomatic efforts, led by the US, aimed at arranging talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials to seek a resolution to the ongoing conflict, which has caused tens of thousands of deaths and displacement.
