Islamabad : Pakistan is set to host its first-ever international seminar on the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in Islamabad on Tuesday, bringing together leading water resource specialists, legal experts, and policymakers from across the world to discuss Pakistan’s legal rights under the historic water-sharing agreement.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar announced that experts from several countries have already arrived in Pakistan to participate in the event, which aims to examine the legal framework of the treaty, Pakistan’s rights over the Indus river system, and the broader implications of the agreement.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Climate Change Minister Dr Musadik Malik, Tarar said the seminar would provide an international platform to present Pakistan’s legal position on the Indus Waters Treaty and enhance global awareness of the country’s water rights.
He reiterated that the treaty cannot be suspended, revoked, amended, or terminated unilaterally, emphasizing that it remains a binding international agreement for both Pakistan and India.
The minister said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has consistently described water as Pakistan’s lifeline and a “red line,” adding that the government remains committed to safeguarding the country’s water interests through legal and diplomatic means.
The seminar is expected to feature detailed discussions on water security, international water law, and regional cooperation, while offering experts an opportunity to exchange views on challenges facing the implementation of the treaty.
