Saudis in Difficult Talks to Keep Ronaldo for Next Season

ISLAMABAD: Saudi football officials are engaged in challenging negotiations to retain Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League for the upcoming season, a source close to the discussions revealed on Thursday.

This comes after the Portuguese superstar hinted at leaving his current club, Al Nassr.

Potential Transfers and Negotiation Details

The source from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which heavily invests in Saudi football clubs including Al Nassr, Al Hilal, and Al Ahli, disclosed that the preferred option is to transfer Ronaldo to Al Hilal.

This move could enable the 40-year-old forward to participate in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States in June. Another possibility is a transfer to Al Ahli, the Asian champions.

Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in early 2023 from Manchester United, has been a major figure in boosting the league’s profile by attracting other elite and young players. His current contract with Al Nassr is set to expire at the end of May. Despite scoring 25 goals and being the league’s top scorer, he has yet to secure a Saudi or continental title with Al Nassr, who finished third this season and recently lost in the Asian Champions League semi-finals.

Impact on Saudi Football and Club World Cup Prospects

The Portuguese star’s announcement that “this chapter is over” stirred speculation about his future. FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed ongoing talks regarding Ronaldo’s potential participation in the Club World Cup, which features an expanded field of 32 teams and a special transfer window from June 1 to 10.

Ronaldo’s presence has been pivotal in transforming Saudi football, signaling the kingdom’s ambitions as it prepares to host the 2034 World Cup. His great rival, Lionel Messi, is also expected to feature at the Club World Cup with Inter Miami.

The negotiations highlight the high stakes and ambitions behind Saudi Arabia’s aggressive recruitment of international stars to elevate their domestic league and global football presence.
