Magic Acquire Desmond Bane in Major Trade with Grizzlies

ISLAMABAD: The Orlando Magic have made a bold move to strengthen their backcourt by trading for Memphis Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane in a deal that sends Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, and multiple draft picks to Memphis.

The trade includes four first-round picks in 2025, 2026, 2028, and 2030, along with a 2029 pick swap option heading to the Grizzlies, marking a significant investment by Orlando in bolstering their shooting and scoring depth.

Bane’s Impact Expected to Boost Magic

Desmond Bane, 26, had an impressive 2024-25 season with Memphis, averaging 19.2 points per game and shooting 39% from beyond the arc.
Known for his offensive prowess, Bane scored 30 or more points in 29 games this season, including two 40-plus point performances.
His efficiency extends to free throws, where he boasts an 88% success rate, along with strong defensive contributions averaging 1.2 steals per game.

Magic president Jeff Weltman expressed excitement about the acquisition, praising Bane’s skill set and basketball IQ.
Orlando aims to address its shooting woes, as the team ranked last in the NBA this season in three-pointers made and shooting percentage, and Bane’s arrival is expected to provide the much-needed perimeter threat.

Grizzlies Look to Rebuild

Memphis is entering a period of transition after a disappointing season and a first-round playoff sweep.
General Manager Zach Kleiman acknowledged the team’s shortcomings despite achieving 48 wins and securing an eighth seed.
Caldwell-Pope, a two-time NBA champion, and Cole Anthony, both consistent contributors for Orlando, now join the Grizzlies as the Magic refocus their efforts around stars Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.

This trade signals Orlando’s ambition to become a strong contender in the Eastern Conference by enhancing their offensive firepower.
