Peshawar/Gilgit/Azad Kashmir: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir have experienced widespread devastation due to monsoon rains, cloudbursts, and flash floods, resulting in a total death toll of 224 people.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), over 206 deaths have been reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with Buner district being the most severely affected. More than a dozen villages in Buner were hit hard by a cloudburst, causing 157 fatalities. Other affected districts include Bajaur, Mansehra, Batagram, Swat, and Shangla. Additionally, over 60 people have been injured.
In Azad Kashmir, heavy rainfall and landslides have led to the deaths of eight individuals, including six members of a single family in Muzaffarabad. Rescue operations are ongoing to evacuate more than 500 tourists stranded at Ratti Gali Base Camp. The Kohala Highway remains closed due to landslides.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, floods and landslides have claimed ten lives—eight in Ghizer and two in Diamer districts. The floodwaters also destroyed the Naltar Power Station, leaving the entire city of Gilgit without electricity.
The Pakistan Army, PDMA, and other rescue agencies are actively engaged in relief efforts, relocating affected people to safe areas. The Meteorological Department has predicted that the monsoon rains will continue intermittently until August 21.
