Pope’s Century Revives England in Test vs India

ISLAMABAD: Ollie Pope’s unbeaten century played a crucial role in reviving England’s hopes in the first Test against India at Headingley.

After India’s strong start, England closed day two at 209-3, still trailing by 262 runs but with renewed confidence.

India dominated early, reaching 430-3 before collapsing to 471 all out.

England took seven wickets in an hour spanning lunch, breathing new life into the match following a tough day one.

Despite tough, overcast conditions, Pope steadied the innings alongside Ben Duckett after Jasprit Bumrah dismissed opener Zak Crawley early.

India’s Collapse Shifts Momentum

India captain Shubman Gill and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant led a commanding morning session, with Pant scoring his seventh Test century in spectacular fashion.

However, Gill fell for 147, and Pant was dismissed for 134, triggering a sudden collapse as India lost five wickets for just 18 runs.

Bumrah continued to apply pressure, claiming crucial wickets, including Joe Root’s, as England fought back.
Although Harry Brook survived a close call off Bumrah, England’s resolve was clear by the end of day two.

England Eyes Comeback

Ben Duckett expressed optimism after bowling India out under 500, emphasizing the importance of a strong start on day three.

Ollie Pope’s performance highlighted his growing influence in England’s batting lineup, offering hope that the hosts can turn the Test in their favor.

India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak admitted disappointment at the collapse but stressed the unpredictable nature of Test cricket.
