Police arrest SIC Chief Sahibzada Hamid Raza in connection with May 9 riots

Faisalabad : Sahibzada Hamid Raza, the Chairman of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), was arrested by Islamabad police on Friday morning and later handed over to the Faisalabad police.

The SIC leader was presented before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Faisalabad, where the court ordered his transfer to jail under police security.

Reports indicate that Hamid Raza was apprehended while traveling from Peshawar to Faisalabad, with Islamabad police detaining him during his journey.

Sahibzada Hasan Raza, the acting chairman of the Sunni Ittehad Council, confirmed the arrest.

Court records show that the Faisalabad ATC had sentenced Hamid Raza to ten years in prison for his involvement in the events of May 9, 2025.

The conviction, delivered on July 31, 2025, related to incidents of an attack on a sensitive institution and the unrest at the Ghulam Muhammadabad Police Station. A total of 108 individuals were convicted in connection with the cases.

Among the convicted were several high-profile Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, and Zartaj Gul. On the other hand, figures like Fawad Chaudhry and Zain Qureshi were acquitted.

It is also noteworthy that Sahibzada Hamid Raza had resigned as the Secretary of Information of the Tehreek Tahafuz Aain-e-Pakistan in September, citing personal reasons for his departure.
