IHC Questions Govt’s Refusal to Support Aafia Siddiqui Case in US

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has demanded a clear explanation from the federal government over its decision not to become a legal party in the ongoing case of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui in the United States.

The court heard a plea submitted by Dr. Fouzia concerning her sister’s deteriorating health and possible repatriation from the U.S.

Court Demands Legal Justification

Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan presided over the session, where Advocate Imran Shafiq represented the petitioner, and senior government officials, including the additional attorney general, were in attendance.

The additional attorney general informed the bench that the government had decided against offering legal assistance or becoming a party in the U.S. court proceedings.

This prompted Justice Khan to question the rationale behind such a decision, emphasizing that governmental choices must be rooted in clear legal reasoning.

“This is a constitutional court. Decisions made without justification cannot be entertained,” he remarked.

Next Hearing Set for July 4

The court directed the government to present valid reasons for its stance at the next hearing.

Until then, the proceedings have been adjourned to Friday, July 4, as the court awaits further clarity on the state’s position in this high-profile case.
