ISLAMABAD: In the past 24 hours, Gaza has witnessed intense violence as dozens of Israeli strikes hit multiple targets throughout the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of 60 people, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry. These figures do not include casualties from the northern part of Gaza, where the last hospital was forced to close following evacuation orders from the Israeli military. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate rapidly as medical facilities struggle to operate under extreme conditions.
Dire Medical Conditions and Malnutrition Crisis
Greek surgeon Christos Georgalas, who worked at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza until May 21, highlighted the devastating impact on children who are the main victims of trauma and malnutrition. Many patients suffer from shrapnel wounds, and the lack of adequate nutrition has severely delayed their recovery. Malnutrition not only slows healing but also makes patients more vulnerable to infections due to prolonged open wounds. Hospital staff themselves face severe hardships, surviving on minimal meals and working without proper pay or safety protections. Some doctors have not received salaries for over a year, forcing many to live in tents and commute to work under dangerous conditions.
Aid Struggles and Growing Desperation
Meanwhile, desperate crowds have rushed aid trucks delivering supplies provided by the World Food Programme (WFP). The urgency and scarcity of resources have created chaotic scenes as hungry and vulnerable civilians scramble for limited food aid. The humanitarian organizations on the ground are grappling with restricted access and an escalating conflict, which further hampers their ability to assist the growing number of displaced and injured individuals.
The US envoy has condemned Hamas’s response to the ongoing conflict as “totally unacceptable,” emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution amid this grave humanitarian crisis.
