Extreme Heatwave Bakes Cities Across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is currently enduring a severe heatwave with temperatures soaring above 45°C in almost all major cities.

Bhakkar and Jacobabad reported the highest temperatures, reaching 49°C, causing widespread discomfort and health risks.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department warns that the hot and dry conditions will persist for the next 48 to 72 hours across much of the country.

Widespread Impact and Health Concerns

Punjab cities like Sargodha and Gujranwala faced temperatures nearing 48°C, while Lahore recorded 46.2°C.
Only hill stations such as Murree saw some relief with cooler temperatures around 32°C.

Sindh’s Jacobabad and Mohenjo-Daro were especially hard hit with readings of 49°C and 48°C respectively.

Karachi’s 40°C temperature combined with 70% humidity made conditions particularly harsh for residents.

Hospitals in Punjab reported a surge in heatstroke cases, mainly among labourers, children, and the elderly.

Power outages worsened the situation, depriving many of cooling facilities like fans and air conditioners.

Government Response and Safety Measures

Authorities across the provinces have urged citizens to stay indoors during peak heat hours and stay hydrated.

Punjab’s Relief Commissioner Nabil Javed ordered officials to provide cool drinking water at public places and set up emergency heatstroke treatment counters at hospitals.

Water supplies in vulnerable areas like Cholistan are being closely monitored to avoid shortages.
Health advisories emphasize wearing light, loose clothing and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm.

The PDMA director warned of the life-threatening nature of the heatwave and urged extra caution for vulnerable groups.
The public is encouraged to contact emergency helpline 1129 if heatstroke symptoms arise.
