Kathmandu: In a historic move, Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice of Nepal, has been sworn in as the country’s first female interim Prime Minister. The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace, marking a significant milestone in Nepal’s political landscape.
Karki, widely respected for her uncompromising stance against corruption during her time in the judiciary, now steps into leadership at a time of national crisis.
Her appointment comes in the wake of violent protests and widespread unrest that recently gripped the nation, leaving 51 people dead and hundreds injured. The turmoil forced the sitting Prime Minister and several ministers to resign. In response, the military was deployed to maintain law and order in the capital, which has now begun to stabilize.
President Ram Chandra Paudel has called on citizens to maintain peace, as the country mourns those lost in the recent clashes, with funeral rites currently underway.
