ISLAMABAD: The Karachi Safe City project has marked a significant milestone by conducting its first successful operation, leading to the arrest of a motorist using a fake registration number plate.
This operation reflects the beginning of a new era in smart policing, enabled by real-time surveillance technology and strong coordination between law enforcement and local government.
First Arrest Through Safe City Cameras
The arrest was made when the newly activated Safe City surveillance cameras flagged a suspicious vehicle in the jurisdiction of Arambagh police station.
Upon detection, authorities promptly responded, verified the fake number plate, and registered a case at the concerned station.
This marks the first official arrest initiated through Karachi’s advanced Safe City camera network.
Director General of Safe City, Asif Ijaz Sheikh, confirmed that the action was carried out following a high-level meeting chaired by the Sindh Chief Minister and Interior Minister.
Govt Pushes Full Activation of Surveillance Network
The Sindh Chief Minister had issued strict instructions to begin real-time operations using surveillance technology already installed across the city.
He also emphasized the need for legal action against individuals involved in criminal activities identified through camera surveillance.
Inspector General of Sindh Police and DG Safe City have been directed to ensure full-scale enforcement using the existing infrastructure.
All surveillance systems are to be made fully operational to monitor vehicle registrations, traffic violations, and any suspicious or criminal activity.
Authorities are confident that the ongoing digital monitoring system will enhance public safety and significantly reduce incidents involving fake vehicle documentation.
