ISLAMABAD: In a high-octane National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) showdown, the San Diego Wave surged to a 3-0 lead before narrowly holding off a late rally by the Houston Dash to secure a 3-2 victory on Friday night.
San Diego’s attacking trio — Kenza Dali, Adriana Leon, and Maria Sanchez — each found the net as the Wave extended their impressive form to six wins in their last eight matches.
The Dash, despite a spirited second-half comeback featuring goals from Barbara Olivieri and Yazmeen Ryan, fell short of completing the turnaround.
Wave Take Command Early
San Diego wasted no time asserting dominance.
In the 17th minute, Dali fired a right-footed shot into the left corner to open the scoring.
A Houston defensive error in the 36th minute gifted Hanna Lundkvist possession, who set up Leon for a clinical finish.
Just six minutes into the second half, Maria Sanchez nodded in a well-delivered cross from Delphine Cascarino to make it 3-0.
The Wave maintained total control with a staggering 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Dash Fight Back, But Fall Short
Barbara Olivieri sparked hope for Houston in the 61st minute with a stunning long-range strike that ricocheted in off the post.
Soon after, Yazmeen Ryan curled in a left-footed effort to cut the deficit to one.
Despite the momentum shift, Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan made a crucial stop to preserve the lead, while Houston’s winless run extended to four matches.
Elsewhere in the league, Gotham FC’s Esther Gonzalez scored a brace to lead her side to a commanding 3-0 win over the Utah Royals, snapping a three-match losing streak.
Barbra Banda also netted for Orlando as they secured their third consecutive win, defeating hosts San Jose.
With this win, San Diego remains firmly in the playoff mix, showcasing attacking fluidity and resilience in equal measure.
