Karachi : Nehal Hashmi of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has taken oath as the new Governor of Sindh, succeeding Kamran Khan Tessori of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement – Pakistan.
The oath was administered by Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput at a ceremony held at the Governor House Karachi. A large number of invited guests gathered on the Governor House lawn to witness the event.
Several key political and administrative figures attended the ceremony, including Syed Murad Ali Shah, Murtaza Wahab, the Inspector General of Sindh Police, along with provincial ministers, members of the Sindh Assembly, and other senior officials.
After assuming office, Governor Hashmi reportedly expressed his determination to play an active role in the province’s development and to improve cooperation between the federal and provincial governments.
During the ceremony, the Sindh Chief Minister and other participants congratulated the newly appointed governor and conveyed their best wishes.
Nehal Hashmi took charge of the position a day after his appointment was approved by Asif Ali Zardari on the recommendation of Shehbaz Sharif.
A lawyer by profession and an experienced politician, Hashmi previously served as a senator from March 2015 to February 2018. Earlier, between 1997 and 1999, he worked as an adviser on law, justice, and human rights to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
Within the party, he has also held important organizational responsibilities, including serving as president of the PML-N’s Karachi chapter and general secretary of the party in Sindh.
Hashmi was elected to the Senate in 2015 on a general seat from Punjab. However, in 2018 he was found guilty in a contempt of court case and served a one-month prison sentence, along with a five-year disqualification from holding public office.
