Trump expresses desire to regain control of Afghanistan’s Bagram airbase

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated plans to re-establish a presence at Afghanistan’s Bagram Airbase, a move that could heighten tensions in the region. Emphasizing the base’s strategic value due to its proximity to China, Trump expressed America’s intention to reclaim this pivotal military site.

Responding to this announcement, the Taliban reiterated their longstanding opposition to foreign military forces on Afghan soil, referencing the Doha Agreement, which prohibits such presence. Nevertheless, the group conveyed openness to dialogue should the United States wish to engage in negotiations.

Reports from Reuters highlight that retaking the Bagram Airbase would be a complex and resource-intensive mission, involving the deployment of thousands of troops and advanced military equipment. U.S. officials, however, have stated that no concrete plans are currently underway regarding this operation.

Afghan political figure Zakir Jalali praised the U.S. president’s diplomatic approach, stressing the importance of fostering a relationship grounded in mutual respect and shared goals, irrespective of military involvement.

Bagram Airbase, Afghanistan’s largest and most significant military installation, served as a central hub for American forces for nearly twenty years. Beyond military infrastructure, the base also included various amenities such as fast-food outlets and shops.

This development comes at a time when the United States is reviewing its 2021 decision to withdraw from Afghanistan and reassessing its strategic footprint in the region.
