Khanpur Dam Faces Critical Water Shortage

ISLAMABAD: The water level at Khanpur Dam has dropped to an alarmingly low point, just eight feet above the dead level, sparking serious concerns for water supply to Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

The dam, which is a major source of drinking water for the twin cities, recorded a reservoir level of 1918 feet on Saturday.

This is well below the conservation level of 1980 feet and dangerously close to the dead level of 1910 feet.

Water inflow has decreased to just 29 cusecs, while outflow is being maintained at 106 cusecs.

Irrigation water supply to parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was suspended a month ago due to the ongoing water shortage.

Water Activities Halt as Supply Threatens to Stop

The impact of the crisis is already visible.

Tourist and water sport activities at the dam have declined to their lowest level this year.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi currently receive only 50 cusecs of water, a volume that Wapda warns may be further reduced or halted if levels continue to fall.

Officials from the Capital Development Authority (CDA) indicated that water supply hours in some low-lying areas have already been cut, and emergency conservation measures could be introduced within weeks.

Climate Shift and Urban Growth Worsen the Crisis

Experts point to shifting weather patterns, poor catchment management, and rising urban demand as key factors behind the crisis.

A year ago, in June 2024, the reservoir level stood at 1935 feet—far higher than today.

Hydrologists have warned this is not a temporary dip but a structural issue requiring long-term planning.

The onset of monsoon rains later this month is now being awaited as a critical opportunity to replenish dam levels.

Authorities have appealed to residents to reduce water usage, particularly for car washing, gardening, and other non-essential purposes.

Government departments have also been urged to revise water release protocols and intensify public awareness efforts.
