ISLAMABAD: England’s vice-captain Ollie Pope will retain his position at number three in the batting lineup for the first Test against India, starting Friday at Headingley.
This decision sidelines young talent Jacob Bethell, who had been competing for the spot following a strong showing in recent white-ball matches.
Pope’s Backing Despite Inconsistent Record
Despite concerns over Pope’s underwhelming averages against top-tier teams like India and Australia, team management has shown continued faith in the 27-year-old.
Pope recently impressed with a score of 171 against Zimbabwe, which likely cemented his place for the series opener.
Though his career Test average stands at 35.49, his figures drop significantly to 24.60 against India and just 15.70 in Ashes contests.
England captain Ben Stokes defended Pope, claiming there was an “agenda” against him following speculation that Bethell would be immediately slotted into the XI upon his return.
Bethell, who opted to play in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bengaluru instead of featuring in the
Zimbabwe Test, is still awaiting his maiden professional century and remains on the sidelines—for now.
Squad Changes and Strategic Moves
The England squad for the opening Test includes two changes from the side that overwhelmed Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge.
Chris Woakes returns from injury to replace Gus Atkinson and will lead the pace attack.
Brydon Carse has been awarded his first home Test cap, replacing Sam Cook in the playing XI.
With Pope maintaining his spot and veteran Joe Root anchoring the middle order, England looks to start strong in the high-stakes five-match series against India.
