Punjab Bans Drone Coverage, Mobilizes Security Forces for Muharram

ISLAMABAD: In a decisive move to ensure maximum security during the holy month of Muharram, the Punjab government has banned the use of drones for procession coverage and mobilized army and Rangers personnel across the province.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari announced that all necessary preparations had been finalized to maintain peace during Muharram.

She revealed that several sleeper cells had already been detained while security agencies continue to monitor emerging threats.

Drone Use Banned, Security on High Alert

Bokhari said that a complete ban on drones had been imposed, adding that anti-drone systems would be deployed, with further equipment being hired from other agencies.

The government is also considering a suspension of mobile services and a ban on pillion riding, depending on the evolving security situation.

With over 38,000 Majalis and 9,000 processions expected across Punjab, the government has deployed more than 238,000 police personnel and 35,000 volunteers.

Specialized forces, including the Dolphin Force and CTD, will remain active throughout the period.

Monitoring, Peace Campaign, and Services for Mourners

In light of ongoing regional tensions — particularly between Iran and Israel — Bokhari stressed the importance of this year’s Muharram and urged religious scholars of all sects to promote peace, tolerance, and unity.

She stated that Safe City cameras had been activated in 18 cities, and additional units were being installed to monitor all routes.

Strict actions will be taken against hate speech, wall chalking, or offensive banners, especially on social media, with cybercrime units on high alert.

Furthermore, to facilitate mourners, the government has arranged:

  • Sabeels (refreshment stalls), monitored by the food department

  • Mobile clinics accompanying processions

  • Wasa tankers to sprinkle water on roads

  • A full traffic management plan, with updates 24 hours before each procession

All officers involved will assume duties before June 29, ensuring a coordinated and comprehensive security strategy.
