Lahore : Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has made a significant statement reaffirming her commitment to safeguarding journalists’ rights and upholding press freedom. She vowed to end all forms of violence and injustice directed at media professionals.
In her message on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Maryam Nawaz emphasized that “press freedom is the foundation of democracy” and that journalists play a vital role as the “guardians of social justice.”
She underscored the necessity of a free and independent press for a thriving democratic society and assured that her government is actively implementing measures to protect journalists’ safety and rights. The Chief Minister also noted that the government is committed to providing housing for displaced journalists and will continue to support those who uphold truth and justice in their work.
Maryam Nawaz further stated that the observance of this day serves as a reminder of journalists who have lost their lives or suffered violence while fulfilling their duty to report the truth. She reassured the public that journalism and journalists are secure in Punjab, asserting that there have been no cases of murder or violence against journalists in the province — and vowed that such incidents will not be tolerated in the future.
