ISLAMABAD: A new chapter in the World Bank’s development cooperation with Pakistan has begun with the appointment of Bolormaa Amgaabazar as the Bank’s next Country Director for Pakistan, beginning July 1, 2025. She replaces the former occupant, Najy Benhassine.
In a formal statement, Amgaabazar remarked, “I am honored to be named the World Bank’s new Country Director for Pakistan.” Millions of individuals have profited from the World Bank and Pakistan’s long-standing collaboration over many decades. I’m excited to strengthen our ties with local organizations, the commercial sector, development partners, civil society, and the federal and provincial governments, among other stakeholders.
Two Decades of Experience in Global Development
Amgaabazar, a native of Mongolia, joins the position with more than 20 years of expertise in international development. She has worked in Africa, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific since joining the World Bank in 2004.
Throughout her leadership career, she has occupied senior roles in the Bank’s country offices in the Kyrgyz Republic, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste.
She brought extensive, cross-regional experience to her new post in Pakistan from her active involvement in international development work throughout Mongolia and Southeast Asia prior to her time at the World Bank.
Focus Areas: Human Development, Energy, and Climate
Amgaabazar underlined her dedication to assisting Pakistan in overcoming its most difficult obstacles.
“We will keep helping Pakistan tackle some of its most pressing development issues, such as learning poverty, child stunting, climate vulnerability, and energy sector sustainability,” she said.
Her nomination comes as Pakistan seeks to strengthen reforms, draw in sustainable investment, and increase resilience to environmental and economic shocks.
