5.6-magnitude earthquake shakes Islamabad, Rawalpindi and parts of KP

Islamabad : A powerful earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, along with several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), on Wednesday, causing panic among residents.

According to the seismological centre, the earthquake’s epicentre was located in Afghanistan’s Hindukush region at a depth of 114 kilometres. Tremors were widely felt in major cities including Peshawar, Rawalpindi, and Swabi, as well as adjoining areas.

Residents of Bajaur, Diamer, and nearby localities also experienced the tremors. However, authorities have reported no immediate casualties or property damage.

The latest quake occurred only days after a similar 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit parts of KP and Punjab on February 20. That tremor was also traced to Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, with a recorded depth of 73 kilometres.
