Trump’s wish remains unfulfilled as Venezuela’s María Corina Machado wins Nobel Peace Prize 2025

Oslo: The Nobel Committee has announced that the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to María Corina Machado, a prominent political leader from Venezuela. However, U.S. President Donald Trump’s wish to receive the prize once again remained unfulfilled.

María Corina is being honored for her long struggle for democracy, human rights, and freedom of expression. She has been actively involved in the fight against authoritarianism in Venezuela, leading opposition movements and taking significant personal risks to promote democratic values.

According to the Nobel Committee, “María Corina Machado has been a powerful voice for democracy not only in Venezuela but across the world.”

For the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, a total of 338 candidates were nominated — including 244 individuals and 94 organizations. The nomination process was completed on January 31.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has long aspired to win the Nobel Peace Prize, failed once again. His supporters had highlighted his involvement in certain Middle East agreements as a basis for the nomination, but the Nobel Committee chose to prioritize the struggle for democratic values instead.

The Nobel Peace Prize, established in 1901, is awarded to individuals or organizations that make significant contributions to global peace, human rights, or the resolution of major international issues.

It is worth recalling that Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan became the youngest-ever recipient of the award in 2014.
