Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced that he will file a $15 billion defamation and libel lawsuit against the renowned American newspaper, the New York Times. The legal action is set to be initiated in a Florida court.
Trump made this announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he accused the New York Times of spreading falsehoods and misinformation about him, his family, and his business ventures. He claimed that the newspaper had been allowed to freely publish damaging and untrue stories for a long time, but now this behavior must come to an end.
In his statement, Trump said, “The New York Times has been permitted for a very long time to lie about me and defame me, but this must stop now.”
This lawsuit is seen as a significant case concerning media freedom and responsibility, as defamation cases often require careful consideration of the truthfulness and verification of published reports. Trump’s move could further escalate tensions between him and the media.
The New York Times has yet to respond to the lawsuit or make any official comments.
