ISLAMABAD: Sri Lanka’s bowlers made the most of a sluggish Colombo pitch on Thursday, reducing Bangladesh to 220 for eight at stumps on Day One of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club.
The rain-disrupted day saw debutant Sonal Dinusha make an immediate impact.
The 24-year-old left-arm spinner, playing in place of retired Angelo Mathews, claimed two crucial wickets and returned with figures of 2 for 22.
His scalps included Litton Das and centurion from the first Test, Mushfiqur Rahim.
Debut Delight and Pace Support
Dinusha’s performance was backed by pacer Vishwa Fernando, who struck early to remove Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.
Back in the team after a strong County run, Vishwa also dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz with a sharp delivery late in the day.
Asitha Fernando, brought in after an injury to Milan Rathnayake, provided additional support with disciplined bowling.
Bangladesh Struggle on Tough Track
Bangladesh’s decision to bat first didn’t pay off as their top order failed to fire.
Shadman Islam was the only batter to show resistance with a gritty 46.
“It wasn’t easy to play shots on this slow kind of surface,” he admitted post-day.
Despite patchy fielding, Sri Lanka’s bowlers executed their plans well to maintain control.
With more rain expected, Day Two could be crucial for both teams in setting the tone of the match.
