ISLAMABAD: Disney’s live-action hybrid Lilo & Stitch has soared past Sinners to become the second highest-grossing film of 2025, continuing its strong run at the North American box office.
The movie pulled in $63 million over the weekend from 4,410 locations, boosting its domestic total to $280.1 million and its global earnings to an impressive $610.8 million.
Box Office Battles and New Releases
While Lilo & Stitch led the weekend, Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning held on to second place with $27.3 million from 3,861 theaters, marking a 57% drop from its opening but maintaining steady performance.
The eighth installment in the franchise has grossed $122.6 million domestically and $353.8 million worldwide, although with its massive $400 million budget, profitability remains a distant goal.
Newcomers also made waves, notably Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends which earned an estimated $21 million from 3,809 venues. Starring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, the film has been well-received with a strong audience score, despite mixed reviews, and brings fresh energy to the beloved franchise.
Horror fans saw the arrival of A24’s Bring Her Back, which debuted with $7.1 million and garnered positive reactions for its unique story and performances.
Summer Box Office Outlook
Industry analysts see this year as a “year of long-term playability,” where strong word-of-mouth and consistent attendance outweigh initial opening weekend totals.
May’s box office is expected to close at $973 million—up 75% from last year—indicating a promising summer season ahead. However, reaching the $4 billion mark set before the pandemic remains a challenge for studios.
With Lilo & Stitch continuing to charm audiences worldwide, and several new films lined up for release, 2025’s box office race is shaping up to be competitive and exciting.
