Glacier burst in Gilgit-Baltistan’s ghizer sparks flooding, forms artificial lake

Gilgit : A sudden and powerful glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) has wreaked havoc in the Ghizer district of Gilgit-Baltistan, causing extensive flooding and damage to several villages, officials confirmed on Friday.

The incident occurred near Tali Das in Gupis, where a glacier gave way, releasing a massive surge of water that inundated nearby settlements and resulted in significant economic losses. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported thanks to timely warnings and evacuations.

According to Faizullah Firaq, spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, the glacier’s burst created a natural dam, forming a large artificial lake that now poses a looming threat to adjacent communities due to the risk of further flooding.

Local authorities report that landslides triggered by the flooding have completely blocked the vital Gilgit–Shandur road. These landslides, occurring on both sides of the Tali Das stream, have effectively isolated the village of Raushan.

The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ghizer noted that a massive landslide around 3 a.m. blocked the flow of the Ghizer River near Raushan, compounding the severity of the situation.

The Home Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Shams Lone, confirmed the widespread destruction but reassured that no loss of life has been reported. Rescue efforts are underway, with over 50 people evacuated safely by helicopters dispatched by the Force Command Northern Areas.

The Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan is closely monitoring the emergency response and coordinating relief efforts.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued warnings of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds expected across Gilgit-Baltistan from August 23 to 27. Areas including Diamer, Astore, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, and Shigar are likely to face intense weather conditions.

The PMD has also cautioned against possible landslides and mudslides that may disrupt transport routes in these mountainous regions, urging residents and local officials to exercise caution and preparedness.

This recent glacial lake outburst flood serves as a stark reminder of the increasing environmental challenges facing Gilgit-Baltistan, emphasizing the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness and climate resilience measures in the region.
