Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif recently visited Tokyo to witness firsthand the blend of historical preservation and modern engineering at the famed Nehōbashi Bridge and its adjoining Metropolitan Expressway project.
Celebrated as a cultural landmark and a popular pedestrian haven, the Nehōbashi Bridge connects Tokyo’s bustling station area with key urban districts along the waterfront. In a visionary move to protect this iconic structure’s architectural integrity, Japanese engineers are developing an underground expressway beneath it, scheduled for completion in the next few years.
This landmark initiative exemplifies Japan’s innovative use of public-private partnerships, coupling sustainable design with cutting-edge infrastructure development. During her visit, Maryam Nawaz Sharif was informed about the project’s eco-friendly measures aimed at minimizing environmental impact while enhancing urban connectivity.
She also toured the “VISTA” redevelopment center—a hub of urban renewal where heritage meets future-forward city planning, showcasing Tokyo’s commitment to sustainable development and cultural conservation.
The Chief Minister’s visit provided valuable lessons on how to marry tradition with progress, offering inspiration for Pakistan’s own journey toward modern yet heritage-conscious urban growth.
