Muharram Moon Sighted, Ashura to Be Observed on July 6

ISLAMABAD: The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has officially announced the sighting of the Muharram moon, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year 1447H on Friday, June 27.

As a result, the 10th of Muharram—Ashura—will be observed on Sunday, July 6 across Pakistan.

Significance and Security Measures

Muharram, one of the four sacred months in Islam, holds immense religious and historical significance for Muslims around the world.

To ensure safety and order during this sacred month, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi chaired a high-level meeting to review the national security strategy.

The meeting assessed Muharram arrangements across all provinces, including Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad.

It was decided that strict action would be taken against individuals promoting hate speech online.

Additionally, the potential suspension of internet and mobile services will be considered after consultations with provincial governments.

Tech-Enabled Monitoring and Nationwide Coordination

Minister Naqvi emphasized that all law enforcement and monitoring efforts will incorporate the latest technology for tracking Muharram processions and majalis.

He reiterated the federal government’s full cooperation with provincial administrations to ensure law and order.

“No one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands,” he stated, adding that coordinated decisions with all stakeholders will be ensured.

Earlier, Pakistan’s space agency SUPARCO had predicted the Muharram moon would likely be visible on June 26, based on its calculated birth on June 25 at 3:32 PM.
