Another blow to India’s global standing as UN experts seek clarification on ‘Operation Sindoor’

New York: In a special report, United Nations (UN) experts have criticized India’s ‘Operation Sindoor,’ declaring it a breach of international law. The experts called on India to adhere to the Indus Waters Treaty in good faith, expressing strong objections to India’s unilateral actions and urging the Indian government to be held accountable for its illegal measures.

The report specifically condemned the use of force by India on May 7, 2025, within Pakistan’s borders during ‘Operation Sindoor,’ labeling it a violation of the UN Charter. The experts pointed out that India had failed to formally notify the UN Security Council about the operation, as required under Article 51 of the Charter. The report also highlighted that India’s actions targeted civilian areas, damaging mosques and causing the deaths and injuries of several civilians.

Pakistan strongly condemned India’s actions and called for an independent and transparent investigation by the UN. Pakistan informed the UN Security Council that it reserved its right to self-defense under Article 51, and pointed out that India had failed to present credible evidence linking Pakistan’s state apparatus to the Pahalgam attack.

The report further stated that the unilateral use of military force under the guise of counterterrorism does not grant any country the right to engage in such actions. It warned that such illegal actions could violate the right to life and lead to a larger and more dangerous conflict.

The UN experts also made it clear that if India’s actions were considered an armed attack, Pakistan would be entitled to defend itself. They stressed that India’s actions represented a grave violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and the principle of non-interference in international relations.
