Islamabad : Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a broad set of reforms in the energy sector and instructed authorities to develop a detailed plan to ensure stability in electricity tariffs.
Chairing a high-level meeting on energy sector reforms, the prime minister reiterated that providing maximum relief to household consumers remains the government’s foremost priority, while safeguarding the interests of the industrial sector is also essential.
The session was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, federal ministers, and senior officials from the finance, economic affairs, information, and energy divisions.
Participants reviewed multiple proposals concerning electricity usage, consumer facilitation, and energy requirements of industries.
PM Shehbaz directed officials to guarantee uninterrupted electricity supply to industrial units, stressing that consistent power availability is vital for increasing exports and generating employment opportunities.
He further instructed authorities to promote digital payment systems for electricity bills so that consumers can avoid unnecessary delays and long queues at offices.
Highlighting the need for modernization, the prime minister called for upgrading the country’s power transmission infrastructure and ordered immediate steps to reduce line losses. He emphasized that the adoption of modern technology is crucial for improving transparency and efficiency in the power sector.
Taking a firm position on electricity theft, the prime minister made it clear that no leniency will be shown in the ongoing crackdown, adding that the financial burden of power theft must not be passed on to honest consumers.
He also directed that renewable energy projects be given top priority to ensure cost-effective and environmentally sustainable electricity generation.
Concluding the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that all reforms in the energy sector must focus on public welfare and economic stability, warning that any negligence or delay in implementation would not be tolerated.
