ISLAMABAD: Turkish wrestling legend Rıza Kayaalp, a five-time World Champion and twelve-time European Champion, has expressed a strong desire to train young wrestlers in Pakistan, aiming to help them achieve global success.
Speaking at the National Press Club Islamabad, Kayaalp shared his inspiring journey from a small Turkish village to becoming one of the sport’s greatest modern champions.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Stardom
Kayaalp described wrestling as more than just a sport, calling it a “test of discipline, precision, and survival.”
He emphasized the high stakes and challenges wrestlers face, but expressed confidence in Pakistan’s energetic youth to rise on the international stage if given proper training and support.
Accompanied by Turkish Embassy officials, Kayaalp called the opportunity to mentor Pakistani athletes “an honour and privilege.”
His proposal sparked interest from local leaders, including the National Press Club President Azhar Jatoi, who suggested establishing a dedicated wrestling academy in Pakistan under Kayaalp’s guidance.
Strengthening Ties Beyond Sports
The event also highlighted strong humanitarian cooperation between Türkiye and Pakistan. Dr. Abdul Rahman Akkoç, Religious Affairs Counsellor at the Turkish Embassy, spoke about the work of Diyanet, Türkiye’s religious and relief organisation active in 81 countries.
This Eid-ul-Adha, Diyanet plans to sacrifice 4,500 animals in 16 Pakistani cities, distributing meat to families in need. Kayaalp’s involvement with Diyanet’s charitable missions underscores his role as both a sports icon and humanitarian ambassador, fostering goodwill between the two nations.
The session ended with mutual commitments to deepen sports collaboration and empower Pakistani youth through wrestling—a sport embodying grit, honour, and global unity.
