Islamabad: In a major step towards sustainable transportation, Pakistan is set to roll out a multi-billion rupee subsidy program aimed at encouraging the purchase of electric bikes and scooters across the country.
The newly proposed Electric Vehicle Policy includes a direct subsidy of PKR 50,000 for buyers of electric two and three-wheelers, along with zero-interest loans to make electric vehicles financially accessible to a larger segment of the population. The government plans to subsidize over two million electric vehicles over the next five years, investing heavily in both consumer incentives and charging infrastructure.
Haroon Akhtar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industry and Production, explained that while electric bikes currently cost nearly double compared to petrol motorcycles, the subsidy and easy financing will bring prices closer to those of traditional bikes. This initiative is expected to make electric bikes a cost-effective alternative and help reduce Pakistan’s dependency on fossil fuels.
Moreover, the government is dedicating PKR 20 billion to develop a nationwide network of charging stations, targeting one station every 50 kilometers, to address one of the biggest challenges in electric vehicle adoption—range anxiety.
Industry insiders highlight that while challenges remain, including battery costs and consumer awareness, the policy marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s transition toward cleaner, greener transportation options
