Tehran : Iran has reportedly announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz for all maritime traffic and commercial shipping, according to state media reports.
Citing Iranian authorities, the reports said the decision comes amid rising regional tensions, which Tehran has linked to recent geopolitical developments and growing security concerns in the region.
The move is expected to have a major impact on global shipping lanes and energy transportation routes.
The Strait of Hormuz is regarded as one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas is transported on a daily basis.
Any disruption in this passage could affect international trade, particularly global energy markets, and may result in higher shipping costs and delays in supply chains.
Authorities have not yet provided details on how long the closure will remain in effect or under what conditions the waterway could be reopened.
