Washington : US President Donald Trump has said that Pakistan played a significant supporting role in facilitating a peace understanding between the United States and Iran, which has recently taken effect after weeks of behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts involving multiple stakeholders.
In an interview with Axios, an American media outlet, Trump praised Pakistan’s leadership, saying their familiarity with Iranian officials helped ease communication during a sensitive and complex negotiation process that required careful coordination.
“They really helped us with this deal. They knew the Iranians. They knew the people. They were good,” Trump said, acknowledging Pakistan’s contribution.
Responding to a question about global leaders, Trump also mentioned several international figures, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, whom he described as a strong and influential leader on the world stage.
Referring to Pakistan’s leadership, Trump said, “In Pakistan, you have Field Marshal, who is great, and you have the prime minister, and they just get along great,” pointing to Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
“The military guy,” he added, “totally respects the prime minister. It’s a beautiful thing to see.”
The agreement has been reported as the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” highlighting Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue through multiple rounds of negotiations that reportedly began in April.
According to details, Pakistan also hosted the initial direct talks between Washington and Tehran on April 11, marking the first face-to-face engagement since the 1979 Islamic Revolution severed diplomatic ties.
Tensions had escalated on February 28 when the United States and Israel carried out coordinated strikes against Iran, prompting retaliatory actions from Tehran targeting strategic Gulf areas, which it accused of supporting the attacks.
The escalation disrupted global energy flows, particularly oil and gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, which remained affected for several months.
Under the reported 14-point framework, the United States has lifted its naval blockade on Iranian ports, while Iran has agreed to restore uninterrupted maritime traffic through the strategic waterway.
Both sides are expected to continue negotiations over the next 60 days, focusing on Iran’s nuclear program and verification mechanisms.
However, continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon are being viewed as a potential obstacle that could affect the durability and implementation of the next phase of the agreement.
