Islamabad: The National Assembly session, chaired by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, is currently underway to discuss the approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. During the session, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar introduced the motion for the amendment, and voting on each clause of the amendment began immediately.
Opposition members protested by staging a sit-in in front of the Speaker’s desk, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) cast their votes in opposition to the amendment.
The results of the voting showed that 231 members supported the 27th Constitutional Amendment, while 4 members voted against it.
Following the vote, opposition members staged a walkout from the National Assembly, while Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Syed Khurshid Shah arrived in the session in a wheelchair.
According to sources, the government benches have 233 members present, and 224 votes are needed for the amendment to pass. With Khurshid Shah’s participation, the government now has the support of 234 members, strengthening its position for the successful passage of the amendment.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar clarified that the key provisions of the 27th Amendment had already been made clear, and any earlier ambiguities regarding the position of the Chief Justice of Pakistan had been resolved. He confirmed that Chief Justice Yahya Afridi would continue in his role.
