Lahore: Today, December 5, the world is observing World Soil Day, aimed at raising awareness about the critical importance of soil health and the need for sustainable practices in utilizing soil resources. The day highlights the crucial role soil plays in sustaining life on Earth, with approximately 95% of our food being derived from the soil. Protecting and preserving soil is vital for our survival and the well-being of future generations.
A recent report reveals alarming changes in soil quality globally, including in Pakistan, due to the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and harmful chemicals. While these chemicals have boosted crop production, they have also reduced the nutritional value of food, which can negatively affect human health. The excessive use of chemicals has led to a decline in soil fertility, making the land barren and affecting both the quantity and quality of crops.
Additionally, the contamination of soil by polluted water, such as runoff from drains, has exacerbated environmental problems, further degrading soil health. Experts stress the need for raising awareness among the public and farmers, encouraging them to adopt sustainable agricultural practices to protect and improve soil quality.
Experts argue that healthy, fertile soil is essential for high-quality crop production. To ensure a sustainable future, it is imperative that we take action collectively to safeguard our environment and soil. Only through joint efforts can we provide future generations with a clean, healthy, and fertile planet.
