G7 Leaders Gather in Canada Amid Tense US Relations

ISLAMABAD: The Group of Seven (G7) leaders met in Kananaskis, Canada, hoping to avoid a clash with US President Donald Trump.

The summit comes at a time of increasing disagreements between the United States and its allies over trade policies and international conflicts.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, the host, emphasized priorities like strengthening peace, securing critical mineral supply chains, and job creation.

However, contentious issues such as US tariffs, the ongoing Middle East conflict, and the war in Ukraine dominated discussions.

The summit location, set in the Canadian Rockies, recalls the tense 2018 meeting when Trump abruptly left after criticizing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Efforts to Prevent Disruptions

To avoid a repeat of past tensions, Canada decided against issuing a traditional joint communique.
Instead, the summit will release chair summaries focusing on actionable items the member countries can collectively pursue.

Extended bilateral talks between Canada and the US are planned to manage trade disputes, particularly over steel and aluminum tariffs.

Other invited leaders, including those from Ukraine, India, and South Korea, aim to discuss their interests directly with President Trump during the summit.

Trump’s Impact on Global Diplomacy

Observers view the summit as an early test of Trump’s willingness to cooperate with international partners.

While Trump has previously expressed interest in resolving conflicts, his unpredictable approach has complicated diplomatic efforts.

French President Emmanuel Macron maintains a frank but positive relationship with Trump despite disagreements on issues like climate change and Ukraine.

The summit also follows the postponement of a UN conference on the Israel-Palestine conflict co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia.
