ISLAMABAD: Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) to prioritize the 2026 T20 World Cup (India-Sri Lanka) and his commitments in franchise leagues.
The 36-year-old, a two-time ODI World Cup winner, ends his 50-over career with 3,990 runs at a staggering strike rate of 126.7—second only to Andre Russell in ODI history.
Maxwell’s Legacy: From ‘The Big Show’ to ODI Great
Maxwell’s career highlight remains his unbeaten 201 (128 balls)* against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, battling severe cramps to pull off one of the greatest ODI knocks ever.

However, persistent injuries, including a freak leg fracture in 2022, impacted his fielding, leading to his decision. “I felt I was letting the team down,” Maxwell admitted, confirming discussions with selectors about phasing in younger players for the 2027 World Cup.
Klaasen Joins Retirement Wave
In related news, South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen (33) also retired from all international cricket, ending a seven-year Proteas career marked by explosive batting.
His 174 vs Australia (2023) remains the second-highest ODI score by a No.5 batter, while his T20I strike rate (141.84) cemented his reputation as a spin-destroyer.
The ultimate entertainer has played his last one-day international.

Both retirements signal a broader shift toward T20 specialization, with Maxwell eyeing more franchise leagues and Klaasen focusing on domestic T20 circuits.
