A powerful explosion rocked a supermarket in the northern Mexican city of Hermosillo on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 individuals and leaving 11 others injured, local authorities confirmed.
Among the victims, several were children, and the blast occurred at a “Waldo’s” store located in the downtown area. Emergency response teams, including firefighters, arrived swiftly on the scene, and the wounded were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Sonora’s Governor Alfonso Durazo addressed the public in a video message, assuring that the government is providing comprehensive medical and psychological support to the affected families. He also stated that a thorough and transparent investigation has been launched to identify the cause of the explosion and hold those responsible accountable.
While authorities have ruled out terrorism or intentional foul play at this point, the exact cause of the blast remains under investigation.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her sorrow over the tragedy on social media, offering her condolences to the families of the victims and conveying her deep sadness over the event.
