Punjab Schools Set to Switch Fully to Solar Power

ISLAMABAD: The Punjab Department of School Education has announced an ambitious plan to convert all higher and secondary schools in the province to solar energy.

Currently, Punjab has 861 operational schools, with only a few already running on solar power.

The department has called for updated data on schools that have undergone solar conversion to track progress effectively.

Implementation and Compliance

School administrators have been directed to submit complete information about their solar power status by June 30, 2025.

Some schools have independently installed solar panels without government aid, showing commitment despite financial constraints.

The education department has warned that principals failing to provide the required data may face disciplinary action, emphasizing accountability.

Teachers’ Perspective and Funding Challenges

Punjab Teachers Union General Secretary Rana Liaquat Ali highlighted that the solar transition initiative has been ongoing for five years.

Due to limited funds, some schools resorted to collecting Rs 15,000 from teachers to install solar systems.

He urged the government to provide free solar panels to all schools to ensure fair and equal access to renewable energy solutions.
